At Nepean Valley Eye Surgeons, we provide Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) with the eye-light® device as one option to assist in the management of dry eye disease and related eyelid conditions.
What is LLLT?
LLLT is a non-invasive treatment that uses LED light to gently warm the eyelids. This warmth may help unblock the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing oils that keep the eyes lubricated and comfortable.
How the Treatment is Performed
A typical treatment session takes around 15 minutes. Patients are seated in a reclined chair, and light is applied to the eyelid area. The procedure is generally painless, and most people are able to return to normal activities immediately after their session.
Potential Benefits
LLLT may help improve symptoms in conditions such as:
- Dry eye disease associated with meibomian gland dysfunction
- Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)
- Chalazion and styes
- Ocular surface irritation related to certain skin conditions (such as rosacea)
The number of sessions required can vary, often ranging between one and four, depending on individual needs.
Safety and Precautions
While LLLT is considered safe for most patients, it is not suitable for everyone. It is not recommended for:
- Pregnant individuals
- People with certain photosensitivity conditions or epilepsy
- Those with active cancers in the treatment area
- Children under 7 years, unless on medical advice
- Mild, short-term side effects such as redness or temporary visual changes may occur.
Further Information
If you are experiencing symptoms of dry eye, an appointment with our ophthalmologists can help determine whether LLLT using eye-light® technology may be appropriate for you. Following an eye examination, your doctor will discuss suitable treatment options tailored to your needs.
