At Nepean Valley Eye Surgeons, we provide comprehensive care for a wide range of eye conditions, including blepharitis. Blepharitis is a common eyelid condition where bacteria, debris, and inflammation affect the eyelid margins. This can contribute to symptoms such as irritation, redness, and fluctuating comfort of the eyes.
What Is Blepharitis?
Blepharitis can occur at any age, but it becomes more common with increasing age. It develops when bacteria and debris build up along the lash line, creating a cycle of irritation and inflammation. Over time, this may affect the function of the tear glands and contribute to dry eye symptoms.
Common signs and symptoms include:
Itchy or irritated eyelids
- A sensation of grittiness or burning in the eyes
- Redness or swelling along the lash line
- Crusting around the eyelashes
- Watery or dry eyes
Management Options
Conventional self-care often involves eyelid hygiene, such as warm compresses and cleaning of the eyelid margins with diluted solutions or commercially available lid wipes. These approaches may provide relief, though they can sometimes be challenging to maintain consistently.
The BlephEx™ Procedure
BlephEx™ is an in-practice procedure offered at Nepean Valley Eye Surgeons. It uses a precision handpiece with a disposable sponge to gently remove bacteria, scurf, and debris from the eyelid margins. This helps reduce the factors that contribute to eyelid inflammation and supports overall eyelid health.
The procedure is typically performed in the clinic and may be repeated at intervals depending on the severity and persistence of the condition. Your ophthalmologist will discuss whether this option is suitable as part of your individual care plan.
Costs and Coverage
Currently, BlephEx™ is not covered by Medicare or private health insurance. Information about fees will be provided during your consultation.
